Safety Tips for Driving While Tired

Safety Tips for Driving While Tired

The main reason you’re driving while tired is that you didn’t get enough rest.

Let’s say you’re late for work. While you and your passenger are headed down your normal route, both of you are trying desperately not to fall back asleep. Then up ahead, you see a massive accident blocking your way. So what can you do to avoid disaster? Even though you found an alternate path, you probably won’t be that much more alert. Here are some tips on what to do when you’re driving while tired.

Take a Nap

The main reason you’re driving while tired is that you didn’t get enough rest. If you don’t sleep enough, it will drag down your productivity at work and make it unsafe if you need to work around heavy machinery, especially if your job is in a factory, a construction site, or in a road work zone. Even if you are working in an administrative job in your company’s head office, you should still take a nap before driving to and from work. A twenty-minute power nap might be all you need if you think caffeine won’t do the trick.

Take Your Vitamins

Staying healthy contributes to how awake you feel during the day. Don’t forget to take your vitamins. Vitamins B and C will help boost your energy after you have a healthy meal to start your day.

Open Your Window

Sometimes, a cold breeze is all you need to jolt you awake. So, turn the chilly weather in the early morning or after sundown in your favor. Open your window and feel the wind on your face, but only let this go for a few minutes. Also be sure that it doesn’t distract you from the road for too long, either. The noise of the wind rushing by should keep you awake as well.

Don’t Drive Too Late at Night

No matter time of day you need to be on the road, take all necessary precautions. Driving while tired at any point in the day is a bad idea, but this becomes even riskier when you go out late at night. The worst times to drive fall between midnight and six am; these are the hours when our bodies naturally want us to go to sleep. Even if your circadian rhythms have adjusted to working the graveyard shift for months or years on end, this is still something you should avoid.
