Construction Area Safety Tips for Drivers

Construction Area Safety Tips for Drivers

Check out these safety tips for driving through construction zones.

Driving through constructions areas should include a combination of being cautious of changes in the road and worker safety. Remain calm when driving through these areas and mindful of the road signs and instructions. Road work is a frequent occurrence, so we have to be prepared at all times to encounter these changes. Check out these safety tips for driving through construction zones.

Following Distance

When driving through a construction zone, it’s essential that you take extra precautions to ensure the safety of workers and other drivers. Slow down and then extend your following distance when driving through the area. The ideal range is between two and three car lengths. This cushion gives you an adequate amount of space to stop abruptly, if you ever need to, without the possibility of colliding with the car in front of you. Take the weather into consideration with your following distance as well, leaving more room between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you.

Assume Workers are Present

Even if you don’t see any workers on the side of the road, assume that there are workers present at the site. Exercise extreme caution when you are passing through; you never know what tasks a worker may be completing beyond your line of sight. Mind the posted speed limits in the area and stay alert, keeping an eye out for reflective gear and hard hats.

Follow Flagger Instructions

When flaggers are onsite, carefully follow their directions. They help direct traffic more efficiently through a work zone and are, therefore, often standing in the middle of the road. Drive slowly and carefully when you’re approaching them and when navigating around the designated area.

Stay Focused

As a driver, you should do everything that you can to minimize your distractions. If necessary, turn your radio down, keep your eyes on the road, and exercise constant vigilance. It’s crucial that when approaching road work and driving through, that you keep both hands on the wheel with your phone out of your reach.

Merge Promptly

Lane closures in work zones are often the cause of many accidents. It’s essential that when you see signs alerting you of road closures, that you promptly adhere to them. You shouldn’t wait until the lane where you’re driving comes to an end, but you should attempt to merge as soon as you can. Keep these safety tips in mind, and you’re golden!
