Safe Driving Tips for the Spring

Safe Driving Tips for the Spring

No matter where you need to go and where you’re coming from, here are some safe driving tips for the spring.

Allergies can make you drowsy when you drive, especially if you don’t react well to your allergy medication. Driving while tired isn’t the only possible safety hazard when you’re out on the road this spring, though. No matter where you need to go and where you’re coming from, here are some safe driving tips for the spring.

Slow Down

You don’t always have to indulge the need for speed. The most important thing to remember for safe driving in the spring is to slow down. Many road accidents happen in the rain because of slippery conditions and careless driving. Slowing down can be frustrating, especially if you’re late for work, but it can also give you more time to react if you need to stop on a dime. Remember to keep a reasonable pace – driving too slowly is almost, if not even more, dangerous than speeding.

Watch Out for Flooding

Springtime also brings heavy rains. Pounding rains cause flooding, and both rain and flooding can make the road dangerous to travel on; for one thing, it makes your car harder to control. For another, it affects your stopping distance, and also can reduce the amount of traction your tires get. In this situation, it’s easier to hydroplane and spin out, which might cause an accident depending on your surroundings.

Avoid Damaged Roads

The ravages of winter weather can damage the roads you need to drive on, too. Even though we are well into spring now, cold weather lingers. In good weather, safe driving is still a challenge, but in bad weather, it can be dangerous, not only for you and other drivers but anyone else you are sharing the road with too.

Look Out for Bicyclists

You might be pulling out of the parking lot and headed down the road to the next intersection. Wherever you need to go, keep in mind that the warmer weather of spring encourages bicyclists to hit the road too, and they might not be willing to stick to the sidewalk, out of the path of your vehicle. If you need to turn right or left or complete a three-point turn so you can back into a parking space near your workplace, you need to be aware of any pedestrians or anyone on a bike which might be passing by as you do so.
