4 Ways to Complete a Comprehensive Job Safety Analysis

4 Ways to Complete a Comprehensive Job Safety Analysis

A job safety analysis is critical for any work environment.

A job safety analysis is critical for any work environment. Whether it is located on a construction site, an industrial facility, or a research laboratory, the most important part of the job is not only productivity  but keeping everyone involved as safe as possible. Here are four different ways to achieve that through completion of a comprehensive job safety analysis procedure.

Choose the Job That Will be Examined

The first step is to decide which particular role will be examined during the job safety analysis. While this may sound straightforward, it can be more complicated than you might expect. Thus, you should keep these factors in mind:

  • Which role incurs the most injury to workers or causes them to fall ill?
  • How likely would workers be injured or contaminated?
  • Would mistakes be costly and catastrophic?
  • Does the job need a set of written instructions to be done well?

Identify Relevant Tasks

Next, identify the relevant tasks. This step means to determine what responsibilities and obligations the job entails. Conducting observations and inspections are key elements of this part of the process. Inspectors should then meet with the employees who were observed so the results can be discussed.

Assess Risk Levels

Once the necessary tasks are identified, risk levels associated with them can be assessed as well. The primary purpose of a job safety analysis is to measure in concrete terms just how dangerous a job role is. Consider these risk factors when performing this step of the analysis:

  • Can workers be trapped in moving parts?
  • Can they slip, fall, or trip?
  • Does the job involve constant heavy lifting and moving cargo?
  • What about temperatures changes?
  • Do they have to deal with excessive noise?

Establish Safety Protocols

Now that tasks and risks have been identified, the next step is to establish safety protocols. These are measures put in place to protect workers and anyone else involved in the work that might be in harm’s way. Is it possible to remove the hazard or replace it another element that is far less dangerous? What about how the job is done, can that be modified? Also, do workers need improved personal protective equipment to perform the task more safely?
