Protecting Your Workers from Excessive Noise

Protecting Your Workers from Excessive Noise

Too much noise in the workplace can be hazardous to the health of everyone inside it. It increases stress, decreases workflow, and can even cause long term health problems if not addressed.

Too much noise in the workplace can be hazardous to the health of everyone inside it. It increases stress, decreases workflow, and can even cause longterm health problems if not addressed. Here are some tips on how to protect your workers against all kinds of excessive noise.

Provide Hearing Protection

Protecting conventional ear protection for all of your workers can reduce the effects of prolonged noise exposure. Earplugs are perhaps the simplest safety measure, but that doesn’t mean they should be dismissed as ineffective. Over-the-ear earplugs and earmuffs are also useful, primarily when your workers are operating heavy saws or jackhammers, tools that make loud, persistent noise. Do whatever you can to protect your workers against both passive and active noise.

Consider Floor Plans

Another way to deflect noise exposure is to consider the way your floors are laid out. Noisy machines can be moved away from where all of your employees are based. Noisy machines can also be concealed and shielded so that the noise isn’t as loud. Plus, some quieter areas are essential in areas where your employees can take to relax and recharge before getting back to work.

Consider Building Designs

You’ll also have to consider the design of your building. Rapid advances in insulation technology have made it much easier to muffle noise and reduce the amount of damage it can do to the human ear. That’s why it’s worth it to insulate all walls, floors, ceilings, windows, and doors. You can also redesign the building to include bio-friendly materials, especially when you are looking to remodel or renovate your current commercial location.

Consider Staffing Policies

Change the way you arrange work schedules. Allow your workers to work in shifts so that workers will have time to let their ears recover before going back to work. This won’t decrease their productivity; in fact, you may find that it boosts their effectiveness. The problem with noise damage is that over time, it will add up. Think about when noisier work needs to happen and try to schedule it at times when they are fewer employees inside the building or onsite.
