How to Develop a Workplace Emergency Safety Plan

If your current emergency safety plan is out of date, now is the time to revise it. You should always make sure that your employees and visitors are kept as safe as possible. When all goes according to plan, you can ensure that any potential injuries are minimal and everyone knows how to respond when an emergency situation arises. Let’s take a closer look.

What Happens?

Sometimes, all that needs to happen is for an employee to call the proper authorities. In some cases, that may mean getting in touch with an emergency number affiliated with your workplace before reaching 911. In case of a fire, the sprinkler systems and other FireStop measures in place may not always activate. Plus, it is entirely possible to be unaware of a fire, so employees may have to trigger the alarms themselves instead.

How Does Evacuation Work?

In the panic and confusion of a mass evacuation, you must ensure that everyone can leave the building or the premises in a calm and orderly fashion. Where are the exits, and do the fire doors work properly? This segment of your emergency safety plan should outline the tasks employees should do – such as sealing windows or closing up doors – they should do before they get out; alternatively, it could just encourage them to focus on getting themselves and others near them to safety in time.

How Will You Make Sure Everyone is Safe?

Once the evacuation is complete, you will need to take a headcount to make sure everyone is accounted for; this is not unlike the procedure you would find in a school during a fire drill. Designating a rally point, or a location where everyone should meet, is essential to answering this question. But one employee should stay back to check for anyone who might be trapped in a bathroom or in an isolated office that might be soundproofed.

Other Tips

Make sure emergency contact numbers are available to everyone on staff. These numbers will make it easier to get in touch with company officials in case something should happen during non-work hours, such as over the weekend. Also, choosing a secondary location for storing important documents, assets, and projects is critical too – even though OSHA does not necessarily mandate this, it remains a good practice.
