Prioritizing Emergency Exits

Prioritizing Emergency Exits

Without emergency exits, and the lighting for the signs, many of your building’s inhabitants wouldn’t know where to go whenever there is an emergency that necessitates a quick and orderly escape.

Without emergency exits, and the lighting for the signs, many of your building’s inhabitants wouldn’t know where to go whenever there is an emergency that necessitates a quick and orderly escape. Panic and chaos can rule the day. One way to avoid that is by prioritizing emergency exits when the new building is under construction or putting them at the top of the list the next time a building is renovated.

Regulations Involving Exits

State and federal authorities set the guidelines and rules for emergency exits in your business. They also set the instructions for all of the electrical safety features, which mainly involve the lighting for exit signs and safety lights throughout the building, and what to do in the event of a brownout or blackout when all of the lights go out. The signs need to be six inches tall, and the letters must be at minimum two inches wide; the letter “I” is considered exempt from this regulation. All light sources need to be reliable and cannot be compromised. That means you need to have a standby generator that is frequently inspected to ensure that it won’t stop working and it can’t be damaged or destroyed by falling concrete when your workers are busily expanding the site.

Inspections Involving Exits

Without timely reviews, you won’t know if anything is wrong with your emergency exits. That goes beyond making sure that they light up or go off as needed. The light bulbs need to be replaced, especially if the sign is not illuminating as expected. The emergency power supply that feeds the lights in case of a crisis must also be tended to, in case it stops working at the worst possible moment. All fuel tanks and generators must be kept clean and free of debris that could interfere with their operation. Screws and fasteners need to be tightened if they have come loose.

Placement of Exits

Finally, it’s time to take a look at how important it is that the emergency exits be well-placed, IF they are inaccessible, then it defeats the entire purpose of having them in the first place. They must be eighty inches from the floor to the bottom of the sign that indicates their presence. Nothing should obscure or block them. You will also have to use Not an Exit signs to point out that an opening that looks like a door doesn’t lead where someone would expect it to, especially during an emergency.
