Construction Safety: Preventing Falls

construction safety

Don’t fall victim to poor construction safety this year. Stand down with OSHA and G & M.

This week, May 2-6, marks the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) third annual National Safety Stand-Down to bring awareness to the risks and dangers of falls in construction. Falls on-site continue to be a leading cause of death for construction workers, accounting for 337 of the 874 construction fatalities in 2014. 337 preventable construction site fatalities, had proper attention been paid to construction safety and eliminating fall hazards. Stand with us as we do our part in educating construction workers about preventing falls.

2016 Safety Stand-Down Goals

Fall prevention construction safety practices were among the top ten most common problems cited by OSHA in 2014. Last year’s stand-down was hugely successful, reaching over 2.5 million workers. This year, OSHA hopes to double that to reach 5 million workers. With that goal, they’ll have educated over half of the country’s construction workers and hopefully sent that fatality statistic downward for upcoming years.

Construction Safety Events and Resources

Thanks to OSHA, there’s no excuse to avoid educating workers on the dangers of construction falls. To learn more about this year’s event, visit their event home page. For training resources, brochures, fact sheets, posters, and many, many more pieces of information to use this week (and beyond), visit their resources page. Check out their event listing to find hundreds of events across the country. Submit your Stand-Down story to OSHA (linked here) to receive an official certificate of recognition for your participation in the stand-down. Finally, share your Stand-Down story on social media using the hashtag #StandDown4Safety.

We’ll be doing our part to prevent construction site falls this week — will you? For more information about fall prevention and construction safety, check out some of our previous blog posts:
