Firestops installed in facilities are critical for building safety. All buildings should have installed both passive firestops and fire-rated doors to help confine fire and smoke locally so that building occupants have time to evacuate a building in the occurrence of a fire.
As a safety precaution, firestops should be inspected, especially around doors and walls of hallways. Fire doors on the end of hallways tremendously help section off and prevent fires from spreading up stairways and other areas of a building to help save lives.
Inspections of firestops should include checking metal hinge plates on doors to see if the fire rating for the door and frame system are meeting building code fire safety requirements.
The fire-rated doors are made to isolate areas affected by a fire. They can’t do their job properly when other firestops are not present. Some other important firestops that should be installed along side fire-rated doors are wall and ceiling joints. If the integrity of ceiling joints is compromised, restore integrity with proper materials.
The integrity of ceiling joints is important because ceiling tiles contain wires, pipes, and conduits. These items should be able to penetrate walls and ceilings to make sure firestops are properly installed. If firestops are not installed in ceiling tiles, the purpose of fire doors being installed in hallways will be defeated.
