Ground Penetrating Radar How Does it Work

Ground-Penetrating Radar

GPR can help locate different objects within a concrete structure, making cutting and drilling much safer and easier.

In construction, ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a valuable tool that helps locate possible obstructions. Primarily used in concrete cutting and core drilling applications, GPR allows professionals  to safely work without damaging things like rebar or conduits that are run inside the concrete. Here’s a quick rundown of how GPR works, and how it can help on the construction site.

Radar Basics

Much like radar in an aviation setting, GPR works by sending a pulse of energy into a material with an antenna. A computer records and interprets how long the signal takes to return, and how strong it is, to create an image. The longer the energy pulse takes to return to the antenna, the further away it is. Vice versa, the sooner it returns the closer an object is. With a lower frequency, it is possible to penetrate deeper but there is a loss in resolution. A GPR system can usually scan up to two feet in a construction setting, but in most areas, 16”-18” are scanned more accurately.

GPR in Construction

In a construction setting, GPR is used to find rebar, metal conduit, plastic conduit (PVC), and stress/post tension cables in concrete slabs. A field mechanic will be able to take a visual survey above and below the concrete slab, when possible, to help identify possible obstructions. Field mechanics know how to perform a GPR scan and read the results accurately, so you have the necessary understanding of what is going on below the surface.
